The Arms of Peter
                                                Jacob van Kooij

The coat of arms was designed in 2020 by the armiger, who was born in The Hague (Zuid Holland) in August 1966, together with Willem van Zon in Utrecht, for the name-bearing descendants of Cornelis Rijk van Kooij, the armiger's father, who was married to Suzanna Ketting.

The ducks in the shield refer to the meaning of the family name associated with a duck decoy. The scalloped diagonal cross symbolizes catching the ducks on the water. The chain consisting of 12 links which form a circle depicting eternity, at the top refers expressively to the maternal family Ketting. It also symbolizes the connection and mutual support of people, as expressed in the motto, which means translated: Faithful to himself - Giving support to others. In the bible 12 is quoted as the number of perfection. The number twelve is seen in numerical terms as the number which refers to numerological facts, such as the fact that there are 12 months, 12 apostles, etcetera.

The star on the helmet is derived from the historical family coat of arms of the family Ketting. These arms also have the field colours blue and silver that have been adopted here as main colours, and are the most appropriate for the depiction of a duck decoy.

The blue shield symbolizes water and stability for mind and body. It symbolizes confidence, loyalty, self-assurance, intelligence, wisdom, truth and faith. Silver stands for purity, a clear conscience, good intentions and kindness. Gold, this metal signifies excellence, as well as intellect, prestige, virtue, and grandeur.

The three ducks symbolize the Trinity, as well as the three descendants of the aforementioned Cornelis Rijk van Kooij and his wife Suzanna Ketting.

The oldest recorded ancestor in the male line of the armiger is Wouter [Nomen Nescio]. All the children of his son Rijk Wouters, who was born before 1640, first started to bear the family name 'van Kooij' in the seventeenth century, including Aert Rijksz van Kooij, from whom the armiger is a direct descendant. This Aert Rijksz van Kooij was born in Nederlangbroek (Utrecht) The Netherlands circa 1665 and died in Leersum (Utrecht) The Netherlands on 13th January, 1748; married in Leersum (Utrecht) The Netherlands on 29th May, 1700 to Neeltje Dirksen van Welijs, born in Darthuizen (Utrecht) The Netherlands about 1676.
