The
arms depict much of what
is important in the
armiger’s life. The
silver tailor’s shears
in memory of her father,
a tailor, and alluding
to the maternal family
name of Silver; the two
cinquefoils for the
family name of Hamilton,
one each for her son and
daughter; the helm to
mark her Scottish feudal
barony.
The crest is an allusion
to the tale of the
Grierson of Lag who kept
a monkey with a silver
whistle and every time
the monkey blew on the
whistle the servants
were expected to attend
on the monkey, when
Grierson died it was
reported that the
servants cut the
monkey’s throat and thus
Rockhall is reputed to
be haunted by the ghost
of the monkey.
The motto ‘Family
Secure’ answers the
Grierson motto of ‘Hoc
Securior’ (All Secure).
The armiger is the first
to receive baronial
recognition from the
Lord Lyon since the
abolition of feudalism
in Scotland.
