The
arms reflect the life
and heritage of the
armiger with a great
economy of images. As a
classically trained
cellist the use of six
Bass Clefs emanating
from the centre of the
shield immediately
recommend themselves to
a wheel like arrangement
and in turn suggest a
Gyronny Arrondia
partition in
gyronways
counterchanging. Since
the armiger is of
Finnish ancestry on both
sides of his family the
use of the Finnish
national colours of blue
and white seemed most
appropriate for the
shield and mantling.
The armiger grew up in
Seattle, Washington and
in seeking some
reference to his home
state for his crest hit
upon the idea of using
the sword wielding
Heraldic Lion from the
Finnish Coat of Arms but
now depicted in green in
allusion to Washington's
nickname as the
"Evergreen State". The
gold heraldic roses on
the crest are also taken
from the Finnish
national Arms.
Finally, as a high
school orchestra
director, the armiger
saw a double meaning in
his motto "Docendo
Discimus" (By Teaching
we are Taught) which
perfectly alludes to his
teaching philosophy
while also being the
actual motto of his
undergraduate Alma
Mater, Central
Washington University.
