The field
Azure is in
honourof the
Virgin
Mary.
The fesse
embattled with
three Teutonic
crosses
represents the
city of Fort
Wayne (as
found in the
diocesan
shield) but
instead of
Argent
(silver) it is
depicted as Or
(gold) for the
heavenly
Jerusalem,
model of all
cities.
The two main
charges are
the white
stump and the
white heraldic
lily, the
white stump
represents the
Koehl family
(as appears on
the family
shield), and
is also a
reference to
Saint
Boniface, upon
whose feast
the armigers
was ordained a
priest, and
whose name the
armiger has
received as a
Benedictine
Oblate of
Clear Creek
Abbey; it is
also a
reference to
his German
heritage.
The white
lilly is a
symbol of the
faith which
has sprung
from the
armiger's
family and is
a reference to
Isaiah 11, St.
Joseph (whose
month is
March, the
armiger's
birth month),
St. Maria
Goretti (a
favourite
Saint) and the
armiger's
French
heritage.
The motto,
“sequimur te
in toto
corde”, from
Daniel 3:41.,
translates to
“we will
follow you
with all our
heart.” Taken
from the
prayer of the
three youths
in the furnace
from the book
of the
armiger's
namesake
prophet,
Daniel, a
prayer about
the desire for
right worship
and the
refusal to
worship false
gods.
The ends of
the galero are
frayed to
resemble
lions’ tails,
for the
armiger's
namesake
prophet and
bold
proclamation
of the faith.
