As
far as the armiger is
aware, there are only
two grants of Arms to
Devlins prior to his
own, both recorded at
the Ulster Office:
Jeremiah Devlin of New
York, who recorded in
1873 and Patrick Devlin
in 1931.
Both of these arms take
a Celtic cross as main
charge which suggested
the idea of three Celtic
crossheads in chief for
the armigers own Arms.
His wife's family is
Tuscan, Lyon Clerk
imaginatively suggested
the use of a
"fleur-de-lys in the
Florentine style" or
"giglio di Firenze" as
the main charge. The
tinctures - Or and Vert
- were taken from the
armigers school's arms
since four generations
of his family had
attended it and he
taught there for nearly
forty years.
