The
Arms are based
on those
historically
associated with
the name (see
Nisbet, p.371),
and incorporate
the Livery
colours, the
chevron and the
roses. For
difference, the
chevron has been
waved and the
three roses
placed in chief.
The roses hold
the additional
significance of
representing the
Armiger’s three
daughters. In
base is placed
an Azure swallow
in memory of the
Armiger’s late
husband, who
regarded the
sight of the
first swallow of
the year as a
sign of the
arrival of
Spring. The
crest of a hand
holding a sprig
of three roses
is a further
reference to the
Armiger’s
daughters.
The Baroness is
descended
through her
Mother from the
Lees family,
Baronets of
Blackrock in
Dublin. This
relationship is
represented by
the gold
cross-crosslet
fitchée and the
Motto, both
taken from the
Arms of Lees of
Blackrock.
Mrs Cadzow’s
late husband’s
father and two
uncles evolved
the Luing breed
of cattle on the
Island of Luing,
just off the
west coast of
Scotland in
Argyllshire .
Pure bred Luing
cattle combine
the outstanding
complementary
qualities of the
Beef Shorthorn
and the Highland
cattle. The
British
Government
officially
recognized the
Luing as a breed
in its own right
in 1965. The
breed is now a
'breed of our
time' and is
thriving right
across the UK,
Ireland, Europe,
Canada, New
Zealand,
Australia and
South America.
The Cadzow
estates in West
Lothian are
still farmed by
the family.
The Arms were
designed by
Romilly Squire
and, in this
example, painted
by Patricia
Bertram.
