Fr. Francisco
Salvado Leal was
appointed Parish
Priest of
Alcaide, Roman
Catholic Diocese
of Guarda, by
His Most
Faithful Majesty
King Luis I of
Portugal and the
Algarves on
April 13, 1886.
The appointment
was registered
on the XL
General Book of
Grace and
Favours of King
Luis I, page 177
(currently
deposited in the
Portuguese
National Archive
- Torre do
Tombo).
Despite being a
Roman Catholic
clergy, Fr.
Francisco
Salvado Leal
produced six
children
together with
the love of his
life, Maria de
Matos. His six
children, Maria
da Luz, Maria da
Nazaré, Maria
Amélia, Maria
Madalena, Maria
da Ressurreição
and Francisco
were all duly
fathered by him
and baptized. In
addition, he
presided over
the marriage of
his children,
buried his three
daughters and
baptized his own
grandchildren.
The relationship
between
Francisco
Salvado Leal and
Maria de Matos
is documented
among academic
circles of those
who studied the
life of his
relative and
politician,
Francisco Pinto
Cunha Leal.
Among the
descendants of
Maria da
Ressurreição,
are Maria de
Lourdes de Matos
Salvado Silva,
Isabel Maria
Salvado Silva
Pinto Correia,
Miguel Silva
Reichinger Pinto
Correia and
Martim Silva
Pinto Correia.
The mount in his
arms alludes to
the parish he
served all his
life, Alcaide,
located on a
hilltop and to
the coat of arms
of Donas, the
place where his
partner Maria de
Matos was forced
to live. The
cherry tree,
with its fruits,
alludes to his
children and the
main
agricultural
crop of his
parish. At the
same time, the
dog evokes the
loyalty (also a
pun on the
surname "Leal",
Portuguese for
"Loyal") he had
towards
parishioners and
family, as
remembered by
Maria de
Lourdes, his
granddaughter.
Finally, the
Saint Peter's
keys reference
the Church of
Saint Peter to
which he was
appointed.
