The
achievement is based on
"The Basset Arms", as
attributed to Sir Ralph
Basset, Chief Justice of
England for Henry I, and
later used by the
Bassets of Tehidy and
Umberleigh in Cornwell
and Devon. A chevron and
three kiwi, in New
Zealand national
colours, have been added
to reflect the adopted
country of this Bassett
family branch since
immigrating from England
in 1841.
The
chevron and kiwi are
symbolic of the military
service to New Zealand
provided by multiple
generations of the
Bassett family. The
recurring use of three
is also significant, and
illustrated by both the
barry wavy and kiwi, as
this number has become a
Bassett family
intergenerational theme.
The crest is more
personal in nature. It
is centred on a wild
animal the armiger has
always admired, in
tinctures of those
regions in New Zealand
where he has mostly
lived; New Plymouth,
Coromandel, and
Wellington. The seme
grenades represent the
armigers profession as
an officer of the Royal
Regiment of New Zealand
Artillery.
