The design
of the arms is based on
the traditional Byrne /
O’Byrne (Ó Broin) arms:
‘Gules a chevron
Argent between three
dexter hands apaumée
couped at the wrist
Argent’ and the
traditional O’Hanlon (Ó
hAnluain) arms ‘Vert
on a mount in base
proper a boar passant
Ermine’.
The arms of these two
famous Irish clans/septs
reflect the adaptation
of heraldry by the
Gaelic chieftains as
they incorporate ancient
tribal symbolism, much
of which, is steeped in
Celtic mythology and in
a wealth of local lore
in their respective
former territories in
the present-day counties
of Wicklow and Armagh.
The current design,
while combining elements
from each, respects this
symbolism and includes
it as follows:
The layout of the
traditional Byrne arms
was chosen as the basis
for the new arms to
reflect the armiger’s
surname, however, for
difference only one of
the three dexter hands
is employed but in the
prime dexter position on
the shield and retaining
its tinctures. The
sinister position has a
key to emphasise and
reflect the Motto – ‘To
Thine Own Self Be
True’ – as the
essential or ‘key
message’ for one’s life
- integrity and honesty.
The base of the shield
has the boar taken from
the O’Hanlon arms – an
ancient symbol of
bravery, courage, and
tenacity. The chevron
ermine was chosen to
incorporate an element
used in various versions
of the Byrne and
O’Hanlon traditional
arms and to reflect the
nobility of these two
ancient clans/septs who
fought long and hard to
maintain their
independence right up to
the seventeenth century.
The armiger is the
daughter of John Joseph
Byrne and his wife, Ann
O’Hanlon.
The armiger’s father is
the son of John Joseph
Byrne and Bridget
Josephine Gaffney, and
grandson of John Joseph
Byrne and Ellen Ward,
and John Joseph Gaffney
and Sarah Jane Coleman.
The armiger’s mother is
the daughter of Francis
Joseph O’Hanlon and
Margaret Larkin, and
granddaughter of Francis
O’Hanlon and Mary
Gibson, and Thomas
Larkin and Margaret
Gleeson.
The armiger assumed
these Arms for herself
and for the descendants
of her parents, John
Joseph Byrne and Ann
O’Hanlon of Ballybrack,
Dún Laoghaire, Co.
Dublin, Ireland.
