The
existence of the
House of
Sassaris has
been recorded in
Mani since the
17th century.
The armiger was
born and raised
in Mezapos,
Mani, Laconia in
Peloponnese. A
Retired
Brigadier
General of the
Hellenic (Greek)
Police, the
armiger holds a
bachelor’s
degree in
History and
Archaeology
Science from the
Faculty of
Philosophy of
the National and
Kapodistrian
University of
Athens,
specialized in
Archaeology and
Art History.
Notable
ancestors of the
armiger were
Nikolaos
Sassaris, a
pirate and
corsair who
acted in the
Aegean Sea and
the Eastern
Mediterranean
Sea in the 18th
century and
became known in
Mani Peninsula
as "Monomatis"
(One-eyed/Monocular)
after losing one
eye in a battle
with the Turks
at sea. Theodore
Sassaris or
Katzos, also a
corsair, who on
March 23, 1821
invaded with his
troops and other
compatriots
("Maniats") and
liberated
Kalamata town in
Southern
Peloponnese and
took part in
many battles of
the National
Liberation
Struggle of
1821. The
latter, in 1826,
fought at Verga,
Almyros and
Diros battle
sites, as
brigadier.
Thirty years
later, at 1856,
Lieutenant
General Nikolaos
Sassaris,
Aide-de-camp of
King Otto and
Queen Amalia of
Greece, is also
one of the known
serving
ancestors of the
armiger.
The
family owns a
characteristic
Maniat tower in
Mezapos, Mani
Peninsula and
has a
military-serving
tradition with
its roots
extending back
to the
Revolution Era
of 1821 to the
present day.
There is a deep
faith in the
fatherland,
reflected in the
motto; the
armiger is a
member of one of
the few families
in the
region who
|
|
favoured
Governor Ioannis
Kapodistrias for
the good of
their homeland
and aside from
any individual
interest.
The
chosen colours
are the Black
that symbolizes
the armiger's
ancestor corsair
Nikolaos
Sassaris and was
used because of
the
characteristic
maniat elegy,
which is often
chanted
nowadays, with
the particular
verse "... black
were her sails,
black and her
paddles ..." and
refers to the
violent death of
Nikolaos
Sassaris. Azure
for the family's
traditional
relationship
with the sea and
White for the
pure faith in
their homeland.

The
White Lambda-shaped
Chevron symbolizes the
constant military
service of the House
members and Spartan
ancestry bloodline while
the Anchor symbolizes
the family tradition and
its special relationship
with the sea. The
crosswise Pistols
indicate the armiger’s
ancestor’s involvement
in the National
Liberation Struggle of
1821 and the Maniat
Tower is a
characteristic of the
place of origin. The
Rock at the base of the
tower is drawn from the
geomorphological status
of the place of origin
and indicates its
barren, as well as the
pure, plain and wild
beauty of the region.
The
motto "Always Faithful"
(translated in Latin
with the well-known
motto "Semper Fidelis")
symbolizes the whole
attitude of the House
towards homeland,
tradition and family.
The
armiger has four sons,
all serving as officers
of the Hellenic Armed
Forces. Peter Sassaris
in the Hellenic Army
Special Operations
Forces, Stavros Sassaris
in the Hellenic Navy
Special Operations
Forces, Theodore
Sassaris in the Hellenic
Air Force Engineer Corps
and Alexander Sassaris
in the Hellenic Navy
Special Operations
Forces too.
