                                                Rev Professor Peter
                                                Lampe

The three golden bowls with their golden flames above a silver mountain of three peaks is the canting coat of arms of the Hessian Lampe of Zennern-Grebenstein family in Kurhessen (Electoral Hesse) and clearly symbolises the meaning of the name: lampe derives from the old German lant-berath (literally: “shining in regard to land”); the mountain signifies land and the burning flames represent the adjective berath, “shining, bright, splendid.” Lant-berath transformed to landbert, lambert, lampert, lampe.

The pedigree of the Hessian Lampe of Zennern-Grebenstein familiy begins in the late 1500s: Adam Lamppe of Zennern was first mentioned in 1593 and Helwig Lampe of Zennern in 1606. The Lampe name, however, was mentioned 130 km south of Zennern as early as the year 1357. Johann He(i)nrich Lampe of Zennern (1768-1834), a military man, settled in Grebenstein and founded the Grebenstein branch. (Peter Lampe, “Neues Archivmaterial aus den Jahren 1357-1606 zur Geschichte der Familie Lampe aus Zennern in Kurhessen,” in Beiträge zur Geschichte der Familien Lampe und verwandter Familien, vol. XIII, Hannover 1981, 453-459 = 70. Jahrgang, 1981, issue 144, pp. 453-459). The genealogy of some present armigers (2.1b, 2.1.1 and 2.1.2; see below) reaches back as far as the fifth century and includes royal lines.

Descendants  of  Heinrich  G.W.  Lampe  [1858-1919; Landesdirektionssekretär  in the  former  Prussian

province Hesse-Nassau in Kassel, Germany, son of J. Martin Lampe of Grebenstein and Calden (1826-1909)] and their spouses are entitled to be armigers if they bear the surname Lampe.
