The Arms of Captain
                                                Samuel Wenzel Billich

Green, gold and black celebrate Jamaica where Mr. Billich was born. Green and gold are also the colours of Ontario, his province of residence and community service. The griffin appears in the arms borne by Billichs in Luxembourg. It is also associated with justice, as in Greek mythology it was said to pull the chariot of Nemesis, Goddess of Justice. The scales of justice refer to Captain Billich's position as a Justice of the Peace. The two Maltese crosses represent his service in the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem and the corporate body known as the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem.

The coronet symbolizes Captain Billich's varied contributions to Canada. The black rat appears in the arms borne by the Billichs of Bavaria. Captain Billich's military service is represented by the sword.

Captain Billich served in both the British and Canadian Armies earning himself the General Service Medal with Northern Ireland Clasp and the Canadian Forces Decoration (CD) with Bar for twenty two plus years of service. During this period, he was decorated by Poland with the Gold Cross of Merit and by Jamaica with the Badge of Honour for Meritorious Service.

The Armiger became the first Jamaican born person to be decorated by Poland and the first member of the Canadian Forces to be decorated by Jamaica. In 1998 Captain Billich was appointed a Justice of the Peace (JP) in and for the Province of Ontario. His civic involvement includes twenty three years with The Venerable Order of St. John and St. John Ambulance: for his service he was made a Commander in the Order. He is also in receipt of the St. John Long Service Medal and two Bars.

The Armiger’s other community involvements include, past Governor of Trent University where he attained his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Studies, a Life Member of the Royal Commonwealth Society and its affiliate the Commonwealth Magistrate and Judges Association and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS). For his community service Captain Billich was awarded the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals.
